The Sage School Theater Company gave an incredible performance of Aladdin JR this weekend in front of an audience of over 400 at The Norwood Theatre. From the moment the curtain opened, the beautiful, authentic costumes and props, bold set design, and creative lighting set the background for a show that entertained attendees of all ages.

“The musical is definitely a highlight of the year for The Sage School, and a way to bring so many member of the community together,” explains Director Danielle Bazinet.  “If you can imagine the set completely covered in handprints, this would be the best way to describe the hours that cast, crew, parents, faculty and staff put into making Aladdin JR the best show yet!  The cast and crew worked very hard and supported one another both on and off stage, truly illustrating the importance that it takes the whole group to make the production a success, and a lot of fun!  I am very proud and grateful for each and every person who contributed to this show!”

For over ten years the Arts Program at Sage has annually produced full-scale musical productions. Students in Grades 5-8 have the opportunity to audition for lead roles, be in the chorus or work as the backstage crew. Consistent with our mission, the musical offers students opportunity to participate and “own” all aspects of a major production. Sets and costumes are designed and built during a production design class, as are the poster, program, and tickets. Students also serve as backstage leaders, representing the crew boss and stage manager. The musical brings together many members of the Sage community, including younger classes that help with sets, parents, and faculty/staff. For the past four years the musical has received many nominations and awards from the Massachusetts Educational Theater Guild for acting, singing and set design.

Aladdin is the story of the street rat Aladdin, (played by Miles K., Grade 8) and Princess Jasmine (played by Leah V., Grade 8), who is forced by her father, the Sultan (played by Oscar C. Grade 8), to marry a prince. When a magical Genie (Niall S., Grade 8) transforms Aladdin into a royal prince, he feels he has a chance to win the heart of Princess Jasmine. However, the evil Jafar (played by Achyuta R., Grade 6) is scheming to become the Sultan. Supporting Jafar and Aladdin, and adding steady humor to the performance, are Iago the Parrot (played by Ellis S., Grade 7) and the Magic Carpet (played by Claudia W., Grade 8), respectively.
