Celebrating Charlie I.: Caroline D. Bradley Scholarship Recipient
The Sage community is brimming with pride as we celebrate an extraordinary accomplishment by one of our own. Charlie I., now in 8th grade, has been named a recipient of the prestigious Caroline D. Bradley Scholarship. This national recognition is one of the highest honors for gifted seventh graders in the United States, providing a four-year high school award along with mentorship and personalized academic support. Charlie’s achievement reflects not only exceptional talent but also dedication, resilience, and leadership within our Sage community.
When Charlie first heard about the scholarship, he decided to apply, inspired by one of his favorite mottos: ‘You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take.’ The process was rigorous, including a detailed application outlining his accomplishments, essays, recommendations, and even taking the SAT. After advancing through the semi-finalist and finalist stages, Charlie completed an interview as the last step of the scholarship process. He credits his mom for inspiring him to apply and supporting him throughout the preparation, helping him approach each stage with confidence and determination.
Charlie also attributes much of his success to his time at Sage. From the moment he arrived in lower school, Sage has provided him with opportunities to thrive academically, socially, and creatively. The school’s small class sizes and personalized attention allowed Charlie to develop close relationships with teachers and mentors who encouraged his intellectual curiosity and leadership. Sage introduced him to activities that would shape his passions, including Model UN, student council, and environmental initiatives, which in turn helped him build the portfolio and experiences that strengthened his scholarship application. Guidance from faculty, such as Ms. Tanner, provided critical support through practice interviews and academic advising, ensuring that Charlie was prepared to excel at every step of the process. Ms. Levesque, who wrote one of Charlie’s recommendation letters, has also been a tremendous supporter of his over the past few years, offering encouragement and mentorship that have been invaluable to his journey.
Beyond academics, Charlie has distinguished himself as a strong leader and advocate for meaningful initiatives. He has championed environmental efforts on campus, from organizing community cleanups to pursuing projects aimed at making Sage greener, including motivating Sage’s administration to shift to a family-style lunch that ultimately reduces food waste and styrofoam usage. He also balances his academic pursuits with creative and athletic passions, from playing piano and soccer to writing for a local newspaper. Through these endeavors, Charlie has consistently demonstrated initiative, collaboration, and a desire to make a positive impact on his community.
Looking ahead, Charlie hopes to attend a secondary school that continues to challenge him academically while offering opportunities in science, history, marine science, and student leadership. His long-term ambitions include pursuing a scientific career followed by a role in politics, demonstrating the same drive, engagement, and vision that have characterized his journey at Sage.
Charlie’s story is a testament to what can be achieved through dedication, inquisitiveness, and the support of a nurturing community. From early experiences at Sage, like his second-grade Project Fair, where he explored water filters and proudly presented his research to the community, to testifying before the Environmental Protection Agency this past summer, Charlie has consistently sought to make a difference. Please join us in congratulating Charlie on this remarkable, well-deserved honor—we can’t wait to see the difference he will continue to make in the world.
