Sage School Students Win 1st Place at SMST STEM Competition

At The Sage School, we often talk about the power of an advanced curriculum and the “strategic thinking” that defines our gifted learners; five of our students turned those concepts into a tangible, first-place victory.

We are incredibly proud to announce that the “Derivative Divas”—a team comprised of Sage students Raesha, Aaron, Charles, Charlie, and Landon—competed at the annual Sharon Math and Science Tournament (SMST) and walked away as the 1st Place Overall Champions.

What is SMST?

The Sharon Math and Science Tournament is a premier STEM competition designed for middle schoolers in the Greater Boston and New England area. It challenges students to push their intellectual limits through individual math and science rounds, team-based problem solving, and a hands-on design challenge.

Excellence Across the Board

The competition at SMST is rigorous, requiring both rapid processing and deep collaboration. Not only did our students secure the top overall spot based on their individual and team scores, but they also earned specific recognition for winning the Design Round.

This specific achievement highlights a core tenet of the Sage Middle School experience: the ability to “tinker, create, design, and compose” to find unconventional solutions to complex problems.

Why This Matters for Gifted Learners

For students who consistently work a grade level ahead, competitions like SMST provide a vital “out-of-the-box” challenge. It allows them to apply their advanced vocabulary and keen observation skills in a high-energy, competitive environment alongside their academic peers.

“We are very excited to share that we won the design round and got 1st place as a team overall,” the students shared in an email to school leadership. Their initiative in forming the team and representing Sage underscores the “intense curiosity” and “passion for learning” that we strive to nurture every day on our Foxboro campus.

Join a Community of Achievers

Seeing our students thrive on the regional stage is a testament to what happens when gifted children are given the right tools and a supportive community. Whether it’s in the lab, on the stage, or at a math tournament, Sage students are prepared to lead and inspire.

Congratulations again to the Derivative Divas on this impressive achievement!
